Community: What Every Developing Artist Needs to Thrive

If you haven't noticed yet, we are big on community here at New Roots! We feel that it is important to grow and develop a supportive community that allows artists to feel welcome to grow at their own pace and freely tell their story. With each new weekend event, webinar, or workshop, we continue to build a community of like-minded artists that envision a future filled with collaboration and support.

We finished yet another incredible New Roots weekend on Sunday — this time with artists from Washington DC, Arizona, and California! Each artist brought a unique story and a passion for sharing their message with the world. There were MANY things that stood out to me about this weekend…

Takeaways:

  1. There is power in numbers. Artists need a community to feel seen, supported, and nurtured. Our artists went through a tremendous amount of growth this past weekend, supporting each other along the way.

  2. Friends who “give it to you straight”. All artists need people to tell them the truth about their music, while empowering them to keep moving forward.

  3. “We are all becoming” . It’s hard to open yourself up for critique when you feel like you are constantly a work in progress. We are all becoming, and therefore it is important to accept the fact that we are constantly growing and improving in our journey.

  4. The New Roots Community is strong and thriving! Whether this is your first New Roots weekend, or you’re an alumni, you are part of a larger community that loves and supports you!

Weekend Recap:

Our artists began the weekend with a fun gathering of new members and New Roots Alumni at a beautiful home near Music Row.

Some Highlights…

The artists had the opportunity to learn from our incredibly talented team of coaches and mentors.

Subjects we covered: Co-writing, Marketing and Self-Release Strategy, Royalty Collection, Management and Resources for Indie Artists, How to Write a Hit Song, Branding and Social Media Marketing, Vocal Coaching, Performance Coaching, Monetizing Your Brand, Networking Tips, and How to Become your Own CEO!

Performance Coaching w/ Wynne Adams

Artists learn how to properly deliver their story and use their environment to their advantage. Wynne guided the artists on Microphone technique, stage presence, dance choreo and more!

Photoshoot w/ Elisabeth Donaldson

Elizabeth is masterful at creating images that represent the artist and their brand. She crafts each session individually, so that the artists shine in their own light!

Songwriting w/ Marty Dodson

There is something special about having a songwriter with 6 #1 HITS talk to you about their process! Each of the New Roots artists received Marty’s book on songwriting. He was even kind enough to sign them afterward!

Connecting to Music City!

We like to explore Music City so our artists get a feel for Nashville and our incredible music scene. The artists took a tour of the Ryman and saw a show at the famous Listening Room Cafe!

Support from Shure Inc.

Ryan Smith from Shure, Inc. was kind enough to give all of the girls a free SM 58 microphone! We are grateful to have a relationship with the Shure team and share in a similar mission to support and empower developing female artists.

Studio Recording at Starstruck Entertainment

Accompanied by TWO-time Grammy-Winning Producer, Matt Leigh, each of the artists had an opportunity to record vocals to the song of their choice at the incredible Starstruck Studios.

There’s just nothing like being a part of a supportive community. We’re here to help! If you are a female artist and would love to participate in one of our weekends, please be sure to apply for our next event! Applications are free :)
